Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that enables the Doctor to examine the lining of the rectum and a portion of the colon (large bowel) by inserting a flexible tube that is about the thickness of your finger into the anus and advancing it slowly into the rectum and lower part of the colon.  With direct visualization, the doctor can determine abnormalities such as polyps (growths from the lining of the colon) diverticuli, irritable bowel, tumors, etc.  The patient is sedated with a mild tranquilizer.  The patient is comfortable and relaxed following administration of the medication.  The test itself takes anywhere from 5 to 7 minutes.  The rectum and lower colon must be completely empty of waste material for the procedure to be accurate and complete.  Specific instructions are given to the patient prior to the procedure.  The procedure is very safe.

Peripheral Vascular CirculationTesting

wpe1.jpg (145204 bytes) Many patients are not aware that circulation is the most important component of their body except for the heart.

Circulation problems can be easily and painlessly diagnosed in the office in an effort to prevent serious problems such as stroke and permanent sexual dysfunction.

Cardiac Stress and Stress Echo Testing

Gray Scene 3.gif (9826 bytes)Every 7 seconds in this country a healthy 37 year old person drops dead from silent heart disease.  Women generally do not experience typical cardiac symptoms (chest pain) like men.  This makes it critical for women to routinely have their heart checked after age 35.  A cardiac stress test can be performed easily and safely by your family doctor.  Ultrasound picture of the heart before and after exercise make the stress test much more accurate than treadmill alone.  Stress tests are used to diagnose many types of health problems, predominantly blockage of the coronary arteries which leads to myocardial infarction (heart attack).  Your doctor can also tell you what a safe target heart rate would be during exercise by performing this simple test.

Duplex Carotid Sonogram

ultra_1.GIF (177119 bytes)A duplex carotid sonogram is a very accurate assessment of blood flow in the carotid arteries (large arteries in the neck supplying most of the blood flow to the brain).  This is a simple, painless in office test requiring no effort or preparation on the part of the patient.  While useful for many types of medical problems, this test is predominantly used to prevent stroke.

Outpatient Cardiac Monitoring

Outpatient cardiac monitoring is simple and painless.  The patient wears a small device about the size of a "walkman radio" which records abnormalities in heart rate or rhythm that occur with activity or during sleep.  This test gives specific information regarding the patient's probability of experiencing cardiac arrest.
